Keep Your Promises

Good morning! Today I am in Matthew 5:33-37. Jesus tells the people around them that their ancestors were told not to break their vows, but He tells them not to even make vows. Don't tell someone that you swear you will do something, but just telling someone a simple yes I will or no I won't. He tells us anything other than that is from the evil one.

God wants us to be people that keep our promises or keep our word when we say we are going to do something. He wants us to be honest about what we are saying. Not just saying things to make people happy. When we tell someone we are going to do something, do it. When we follow through with things we tell people we are going to do, that makes us trustworthy. People need that from us. We live in a sinful society that does not trust anyone, but people need us to be honest. People need to know they can trust us. God kept every promise He made in the Bible and still does to this day. And He created us in His image, so we have the capacity in us to keep our promises as well. If you feel like you have to add I swear or I promise, that may be a red flag that you truly don't want to do whatever you are asked, and more than likely you won't. And you then are giving someone a false hope, and it could be something that they truly needed, but when you don't keep that promise, it shows them that they cannot count on you.

Do you keep your word to people? Not only do we live in a sinful society, but a very busy society. Sometimes we take on more than what we can do because we are trying to prove ourselves, or trying to look good to certain people. Sometimes it's also because we have a hard time saying no. But when we over load ourselves so much with things we promise others we will do, we are hurting ourselves and hurting others. We are hurting ourselves because it causes us to over stress, and sometimes it will cause us just to shut down completely. Then the people we were supposed to be helping don't get the help they need. We are each just one person. There is only so much time that we have. God does not want us to be over loaded and stressed out. He wants us to lean on Him, and allow Him to show us what we should say yes to or no to. When someone asks you to do something, take a moment and truly ask yourself if you can do it or not. Do you have the time to do it, or do you already have enough going on. People would rather you be honest and say no, then they can find someone else who can. Allow God to help you say yes to the right things for you. He can. He is the one that has the perfect plan for our lives, and He wants to help you stay on the right track, stress free, and unburdened.
