Good morning! Today I am in Luke 7:36-50. A Pharisee named Simon invited Jesus to come to his house and eat. Jesus accepted and went and ate with him. As they were eating, an immoral woman from the city, came in carrying an alabaster jar with expensive perfume. She knelt down at His feet, weeping. Her tears were falling on His feet, and she was drying them with her hair, and using the perfume to wash His feet. Simon began saying to himself that if Jesus was a prophet, He would know what kind of woman was at His feet. Jesus answered Simon's thoughts by telling him a story of a man loaning 2 men money. One had borrowed 500 pieces of silver and the other 50. But neither man could pay back the loan, so the man forgave them of their debt, cancelling them. Jesus asked Simon who he thought loved the man more. Simon answered the man with the larger debt. Jesus told him that was right. Then He told Simon that when He came into his house, he did not offer Jesus water to wash His feet, nor did he greet Him with a kiss, and he neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint His head. But the woman has washed His feet with her tears, was kissing and anointing His feet with expensive perfume. He told Simon that her sins were forgiven, even though there were many. She has shown Him much love. But a person who has been forgiven little, only shows little love. Then He turned to the woman and told her that her sins were forgiven. Telling her that her faith had saved her, to go in peace.
Such a beautiful depiction of gratitude and love. The Pharisee could not understand why Jesus would let such a woman near Him, let alone touch and kiss His feet. But Jesus saw the woman's heart. He knew exactly who she was, and what she had done, and she came in believing in the man that had done so much for the people. She poured out her heart to Jesus and He forgave her.
How have you responded to Jesus' invitation to come to Him? This woman responded to Jesus' invitation by bringing all she had to Him. Bowing before Him, and pouring her heart out to Him. Jesus does not care what you have done or where you came from. He loves you and wants you to come to Him. Come to Him with whatever burden we are carrying from past mistakes, past sins. Come to Him and lay all those things down. Giving those things to Him, and asking Him for forgiveness. Then allowing Him to cleanse our hearts and change our lives. This woman had many sins, and He forgave everyone of them, and told her to go in peace. We can have that same peace today. Ask God to forgive you and cleanse you. When you truly seek forgiveness and repent, you too will be overflowing with love for Jesus, just as this woman's response was overflowing love.
