A True Child of God

Good morning! Today I am in John 8:31-47. Jesus is still talking to the crowd around Him, including the Pharisees and religious leaders. He tells everyone that they are truly His disciples if they remain faithful to His teachings, and they would know the truth and the truth would set them free. But the people replied that they were children of Abraham, that they had never been slaves to anyone, so how could they be set free? Jesus tells them that everyone who sins is a slave of sin, and a slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is a part of the family forever. "So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. (John 8:35)" He goes on to tell them that He knows they are descendants of Abraham, but some of them are trying to kill Him because there is no room in their hearts for His message. He tells them that He is telling them what He saw when He was with His Father, but they are following the advice of their father. The people declared that their father was Abraham. But Jesus told them that if they were really the children of Abraham they would follow His example. Instead they are trying to kill Him because He told them the truth, which He heard from God. And Abraham never did such a thing. Instead, they are imitating their real father. They told Jesus that they were not illegitimate children, that God was their true Father. But Jesus told them if God was their true Father, they would love him because He was sent to them by God. He tells them that they can't understand Him because they can't hear Him for they are the children of their father, the devil, and they love to do the evil things he does. Saying that he was a murderer from the beginning, and has always hated the truth because there is no truth in him. His lying is consistent with his character, for he is the father of lies. So when Jesus tells the truth, they naturally don't believe Him. He tells them that anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the Words of God, but they don't listen because they don't belong to God.

Jesus was clearly telling them that their actions proved who they belonged to. Because they did not believe Him and were trying to kill Him, they did not truly belong to God. It did not matter who their ancestors were.

Just like Jesus was telling them, He tells us today. Our actions prove who we belong to. Our ancestors will not get us to heaven. We must choose God for ourselves, and when we do, we must follow through with our actions. If we follow the ways of this world, staying trapped in sin, and not obeying God, we are not truly His children. And that way leads to death. It leads to eternity in hell after we pass away.

We must believe Jesus for ourselves and follow through with our actions. We must believe Him and then start spending time with Him, getting to know Him, so we know what we should and should not do. His Word, the Bible, is a guide for us in this life. The more we spend time in it with God, the more He shows us. The more His can guide us on the right path. Don't turn to the world, turn to Him. Allow Him to guide you.
