Good morning! Today I am in Luke 12:13-21. While the crowd was surrounding Jesus, someone in the crowd called out to Him and asked Him to tell his brother to divide their father's estate with him. Jesus asked Him, who made Him judge over him to decide things like that. Then He told them all to guard themselves against every form of greed because life is not measured by how much they own. Then He tells them a story about a rich man who had a fertile farm. He asked himself what he should do because he didn't have anymore room to store all his crops. So he decided to tear down all his barns and build bigger ones. Once he did, he told himself now he can sit back and relax because he had enough for years to come. But God told him, "You fool! You will die this very night and then who will get everything you worked for? (Luke 12:20)" Jesus tells them that a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.
Everything we own will one day disappear, it can all be gone in a second. God does not want us focusing on material possessions that are here today and gone tomorrow, but instead focusing on building a relationship with Him. This world wants to take our attention off of God and onto the things of this world. The world tells us we need more money, more possessions, more whatever to be happy and satisfied. But we cannot place our happiness on these things. These things come from selfish desires. We look at other people and what they have and decide to go after those things. Greed is the desire to acquire more wealth, power, or possessions, usually at the expense of others.
Instead of focusing on what others have, focus on God and allow Him to give you everything you need. He also gives you the desires of your heart, desires you may have not realized you had. God knows exactly what you need, and He will help you. In Him is where we find our satisfaction, our joy, our peace, everything we truly need.
