Good morning! Today I am in John 8:12-20. Jesus tells the people that He is the Light of the World, and if they follow Him they won't have to walk in darkness because they will have the light that leads to life. The Pharisees tell Him that His claims are not valid because He talks about Himself. But Jesus tells them that His claims are valid because He knows where He came from and where He is going, but they don't know. He tells them that they judge Him by human standards, but He does not judge anyone, and if He did judge, His judgment would be correct because He is not alone. His Father is with Him which means, by their laws, He has two witnesses, Himself and His Father. The Pharisees ask Him who His Father is. Jesus tells them that because they don't know Him, they don't know who His Father is, if they knew Him, they would also know His Father.
Jesus was saying all this while He was in the Treasury of the Temple, where they kept the offerings and where candles burned to symbolize the pillar of fire that led the people of Israel through the wilderness in Exodus 13:21-22. The pillar of fire represented God's presence, protection, and guidance. Jesus was standing where they kept the offerings, and He Himself was made an offering for us. But He also stood where the candles represented the pillar of fire, while He was telling us He is the Light of the World. In the same way God led His people with the pillar of fire, Jesus leads us through the wilderness. He guides us and protects us just as God did with the pillar of fire.
Jesus tells them that if they knew Him, they would also know His Father. If you know Jesus, You Know the Father. How do you get to know Jesus? By spending time with Him. We must spend time with Jesus, in His Word and in prayer, so we can get to know Him. The more we spend time with Him, the closer He gets to us. With Him, He gets rid of the darkness in our lives. The closer we get to Him, the more He exposes the sin in our lives we try to hide, and He cleans it out of us. He guides us and protects us. We are to follow Him and His commands in everything we do. But we have to get to know Him. The more we know Him, the more we get to know the Father that created everyone of us.
