Good morning! This morning I am in Matthew 17:14-20, Mark 9:14-29, and Luke 9:37-43. The next day, as Jesus and His disciples come down from the mountain, a large crowd was gathered. The religious leaders in the crowd were arguing. When the crowd saw Jesus they ran to greet Him. Jesus asked them why they were arguing. A man in the crowd called out to Jesus begging Him to have mercy on his son. He told Jesus that his son was possessed by an evil spirit that often tried to kill his son by throwing him violently to the ground, sometimes into a fire or water. Causing him to convulse and foam at the mouth. Also causing the boy to not be able to hear and speak. He told Jesus that he had brought his son to the disciples but they couldn't cast it out. Jesus turned to the people and said, "You faithless people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me." When they brought the boy, the evil spirit saw Jesus and threw the boy into a violent convulsion. Jesus asked the Father how long it had been happening? And the man told Jesus since he was a little boy. Then he asked Jesus to have mercy on him and help them, if He could. Jesus responded, "If I can? Anything is possible if a person believes." The father instantly cried out,"I do believe! But help me overcome my unbelief!" Jesus commanded the evil spirits to come out of the child and never enter him again. The spirit screamed and threw the boy to the ground, into another violent convulsion and left him. The boy appeared to be dead. The crowd began saying that the boy was dead, but Jesus took the boy by the hand and helped him up. When Jesus and the disciples left the crowd, His disciples asked Him why they couldn't cast out the spirit. Jesus told them this kind of spirit can only come out through prayer. Telling them that if they had faith as small as a mustard seed, they could move a mountain. Nothing would be impossible.
There is great potential in even a little faith when we trust in God's power to act. But we must trust in His power and not try to go in our own strength. Our own strength is never enough. We must lean on Christ. Just like the man asked Jesus to help his unbelief, we must ask Jesus to help us with our unbelief. When you are facing a major problem, turn to Jesus. Ask Him to build your faith so you can overcome the obstacles that may be in your way. The more we spend time with God, the more our spiritual vision improves and allows us to see and understand God better. We don't have to be afraid when we face an evil spirit like this, but know that Jesus is going with us, and He will give us the power through Him to confront the evil and suffering, no matter how bad it is. Jesus has already won the battle over the enemy. We must walk in that faith. Nothing is too difficult for God. With faith, we can have everything we need to serve Him. Faith is a gift from God. Growing in faith is a constant process of daily renewing our trust in Jesus. Prayer is the key that unlocks faith in our lives. Effective prayer needs both the attitude of complete dependence and the action of asking. Trust in God today, and allow Him to grow your faith. He will be there to help you face whatever trail comes your way.
