Good morning! Today I am in Luke 15:1-7. Many times when Jesus taught, tax collectors and other types of sinners, would often listen to Him. The Pharisees and religious leaders complained because He associated with those types of people as well as ate with them. Jesus told them the story of the man with the lost sheep. He told them a man that owned 100 sheep, had one get lost. He left the 99 sheep to go find the one lost. And when he found it, he carries it back to the other 99, on his shoulders. And when he gets back, he calls together his friends and family to rejoice for finding the lost sheep. Jesus tells them that it is the same way in heaven when one lost sinner repents and turns to God. There is more rejoicing in heaven over one lost sinner than 99 others who are righteous and haven't strayed away.
The Pharisees and religious leaders were always careful to keep the Old Testament laws of cleanliness by avoiding certain types of people and situations, as well as in washing ceremonies. But Jesus paid no attention to these things. He constantly went to the people who society regarded as unclean or unworthy. He didn't even follow the hand washing rituals. He went to the people that needed help the most. The ones that were in danger of being lost forever, just like the one sheep that was lost. He did not come for the people that were like the religious leaders and the Pharisees that thought they were righteous and didn't need saving, the ones that never strayed away. He went looking for the ones that society didn't want.
At one point, every one of us were sinners. We have all strayed away from God at some point, to seek our own selfish ways, and Jesus went to find us. He went to find us in the middle of our sin, in the wilderness. Calling us to Him when we are struggling. Calling us to come back to Him, so He can help us. And when we do, all of heaven rejoices. Jesus doesn't care about what we have done, He just wants us to come back to Him. You are safe in His arms.
In the same way that Jesus hung out with the sinners, not caring what the Pharisees and religious leaders thought, He wants us to go out and bring sinners to Him. We can't be like the Pharisees and religious leaders, thinking that certain types of people are not worthy, because none of us are worthy. We all have fallen short. But Jesus saves us, and makes us worthy. And He wants to do that for everyone. And He wants everyone of us to share that Good News, that He came for everyone. To save everyone. We are no better than anyone else. Sin is sin. Everyone deserves a chance to know God. We must ask God to help us speak to other people about Him. Asking God how we can help the lost. He will show us ways. But we have to be open to it.
