Washed

Good morning! Today I am in John 13:1-20. Jesus knew His hour had come to leave this world and return to His Father. He had loved His disciples during His ministry on earth, and He would love them to the very end. Jesus knew that His Father had given Him authority over everything. He got up from the table, took His robe off, wrapped a towel around His waist, and poured water into a basin. And He began washing and drying His disciples feet. When He got to Peter, he asked Him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet? (John 13:6)" Jesus told Peter that he doesn't understand what He is doing, but one day he would. Peter told the Lord that He would never wash his feet. But Jesus tells him that unless He washes Peter's feet, he won't belong to Him. Peter tells Jesus not to just wash his feet but his head and hands as well. Jesus tells Peter that someone who has bathed all over, does not need to wash, except for their feet. He tells them that they are clean, but not all of them. When He finished washing their feet, He put His robe back on, and sat down at the table. Jesus asked the disciples if they understood what He had just done? He tells them that they call Him Lord and Teacher, and those are correct. And since He has washed their feet, they too should wash each other's feet. Telling them that He has given them an example to follow. And God will bless them for doing them. He then tells them that He is not telling these things to all of them because He knows the ones He had chosen. But this fulfills the Scripture that says, "The one who eats my food has turned against Me (Psalm 41:9)." He tells them this before it happens, so that when it happens, they will believe He is the Messiah. He tells them that anyone who welcomes His messengers, welcome Him, and anyone who welcomes Him is welcoming the Father that sent Him.

Jesus tells them that unless He washes their feet, they will not belong to Him. Jesus was about to die for them. John tells us in 13:1 that Jesus loved His disciples while He was on earth, and He was going to love them until the very end. He died on the cross because of His love for us. When we believe and accept Jesus into our lives, He washes us clean, not just our feet, but all of us. His blood covers us and washes us clean of the sin that separates us from God. When we get baptized, it is an outward representation of what God is doing inside of us. So just like Jesus washed His disciple's feet, He is cleansing us as well. And anyone that accepts this, belongs to Him. And just as He has done this for us, we are to do this for others as well. We are to help others find Jesus too. We help others get to know Jesus by serving them and talking to them about Jesus. When we are asked why we do what we do, we can tell them who sent us and why. Jesus sends us out into the world around us to show His love to everyone we come in contact with. We are His messengers in the world around us. And anyone who accepts what we are saying and welcomes us, also welcome Him and His Father that sent Him.

God gives us the chance to come to Him. He is the one that calls us to Him, and makes us part of the Kingdom, but He also sends us out as messengers for Him. Workers for Him. Giving us everything we need to serve Him and His people here on earth, like He did for Jesus. He gives us everything we need. All we have to do is accept Jesus and His salvation, and seek His guidance after that. And He will guide us in how we can be His messengers everyday.
