Good morning! Today I am in 1 Thessalonians 2:1-16. Paul tells the Thessalonians that they know that their visit to them was not a failure. They knew how bad they had been treated in Philippi just before they visited them. And God gave them the courage to declare His Good News boldly, in spite of great opposition. For they speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Their purpose is to please God, not people. For He alone examines the motives of our hearts. He told them that they never once tried to win them with flattery. And God is their witness that they were not pretending to be their friends just to get their money. And they had never sought human praise. He told them that as apostles of Jesus Christ they had a right to make some demands of them, but instead, they were like children among them, or like a mother feeding and caring for her own children. They loved them so much that they shared with them not only God's Good News but their own lives too. They worked hard among them, earning a living for themselves, so they would not be a burden on them as they preached the Good News to them. They are their witness and so was God that they were devout, honest, and faultless toward all of them. They pleaded with them, encouraged them, and urged them to live their lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For He called them to share in His Kingdom and glory. He tells them that He never stops thanking God that when they received His message, they didn't think their words were merely human ideas. That they accepted their words as the very words of God. And His Word continues to work in them who believe. They even suffered persecution from their own countrymen. In this way they imitated the believers in God's churches in Judea, who suffered for their belief in Jesus Christ as well. He tells them that those who persecute them fail to please God and work against all humanity as they try to keep them from preaching the Good News of salvation. By doing this they continue to pile up their sins. But the anger of God has caught up with them at last.
Paul reminds the Thessalonians of their visit with them. How they did not go there to try to win them with flattery or to try to get money from them. He went there to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with them. They wanted the Thessalonians to come to know Christ. And as they were there to preach the Good News they worked just as everyone else did. They lived as examples to the Thessalonians of how we should live to serve God and to serve one another. Not being a burden to anyone, but helping wherever they were needed.
God wants us to live as Paul did, as Jesus did. Jesus was not a burden to anyone. He gave His life for us. As He was alive, He served all those around Him. He was not a burden to anyone, or lazy, He worked and served God. We are to do the same thing. As we share the Good News with the world around us, we are to be sensitive to the needs of those around us, and do our best to help. As we love God and serve Him and those around us, people can see the love of God through us. Our words and actions have major impact on those around us, and we must make sure those words and actions are lining up with God, if not we will be hurting people, not helping. God can help us with this though. We are not doing it alone. As we spend time with Him, He helps us more and more. Refining us more each time we spend time with Him. Do your best to be a living example for God today.
