Drop Your Net

This morning I am in Luke 5:1-11. One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the sea of Galilee, He was teaching to a crowd of people. On the shore were 2 fishing boats. One was Simon and Andrew's, and the other boat was James and John. As the crowd began pressing in, Jesus stepped into Simon and Andrew's boat, and told Simon to push out a little, and He began to teach the people from there. After He taught, He told Simon to go out further to catch some fish. Simon told Him that they had fished all night and didn't catch anything, but that he would put the net out because He told them to. When they cast their nets out, they filled with fish, so full they had to have help to pull it in. James and John's nets filled as well. Once they got the nets in Simon fell at Jesus' feet and told Jesus that he was not good enough for Jesus to be there with him for he was too much of a sinner to be around Him. Jesus told Simon to not be afraid, from now on he would be fishing for people. As soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.

Amazing! God is so good! Jesus met Simon, Andrew, James, and John right where they were in their everyday activities, and called them to follow Him. Jesus called them, and they dropped everything to follow Him. Jesus meets us right where we are in our everyday lives. He sees and knows exactly what we are doing, even while we are sinners, and He calls us to follow Him. We don't have to be afraid. But we must recognize that we are not worthy on our own, that Jesus is the one that saves us. He is the one that calls us and gives us the ability to follow Him.

Just like these fishermen, when Jesus calls, we must stop the sinful life that we are living, and follow Him. That is obedience. Allowing Him to lead us on the right paths for us for He knows the best things for us.

Have you dropped your sinful life to follow Jesus? It is not easy. It may take a couple of times for Him to call us before we actually have enough faith to step out. This was not the first time that Jesus had call these men to follow Him. Their faith had to grow. Their faith grew the more they watched Jesus. As we get into God's Word, spending more time with Him, praying and worshiping Him, the more our faith will grow. He wants us to be fishermen of people too. Using the gifts and talents He has gifted us with to draw people to Him. Allow Him to use you where ever you are today.
